Dr. Benjamin Grooters or Dr. Ben (as most of the staff and patients call him) was born in Edina, Minnesota. Growing up, his dad worked in academics for athletes for universities, which moved them all around the country. They landed at Florida State University in Tallahassee during his high school years. He attended Lincoln High School and enjoyed playing football for the Trojans. He went to the University of Colorado at Boulder and was a walk-on freshman for the Buffs football team and later graduated from University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. His wife, Shannon, is a multi-generational Tallahassee native. They met in high school and dated throughout college and married in 2002. Not long after they married, he attended Louisiana State University School of Dentistry and graduated in 2007 (just after enduring Hurricane Katrina) and has worked as an associate and partner in group practices, a corporate dental practice and now as a solo private-practice owner. He purchased Apalachee Bay Family Dental from Dr. Douglas Evans when he retired in June 2020 because he wanted the autonomy of his own practice.

Dr. Ben and his wife have three children, Jack, Paige and Barrett. Now that they own a family business, you will often see his wife, Shannon, at the front desk answering phones or handling administrative duties in the office. They both enjoy traveling and visiting their large, blended family all over the country from Florida, Minnesota, Montana and California or spending time with their kids at their many school activities.

Dr. Ben chose the field of dentistry because it involves creativity and artistry, health sciences, engineering and problem-solving combined with business and leadership skills. He cares deeply about serving others and making a positive impact in people’s lives and dentistry allows him to combine his skills and passions into his profession. He believes in listening to patients’ needs and concerns and coming up with a treatment plan that suits each individual’s goals and expectations. As a kid, his own scary dental experiences with a broken tooth and abscess have shaped how he approaches patient care. He uses a gentle, relatable approach to put you at ease and make you comfortable so you can overcome your dental fears and together, achieve your best oral health.
